Harare- Mozambican singer and songwriter, Eliseus Meneses has attributed his success in music to his upbringing in Zimbabwe.
“I came to know of various musical styles during my decade long stay in Harare,” narrated Eliseus.
Now based in Maputo, the Afrobeat star’s family moved to Zimbabwe when Eliseus was still a toddler only to retrace back footsteps to Mozambique when he was aged 10.
“I write most of my music in ChiShona, remember it was the first language I was exposed to,” continued the artist.
Having attended Mukurumbira Primary School in Mufakose until Grade 5. Eliseus’ ability to sing in ChiShona, ChiCena, English and Portuguese has earned him a wider fanbase.
“At first it was diffucult for some to identify with me because of my background, cultural mix and identity.
But as an artist, being humble means respecting others despite being popular and for me it works,” he said.
Speaking of his current hit single titled, ‘Kundinyengeza’ in which the first verse is in ChiShona as is most of his songs.
Eliseus said he is enjoying the spotlight following its launch a few weeks ago. Whilst the hit song’s lyric and theme evolves around love and betrayal. The singer also comments on various social issues whilst maintaining an Afro-pop if not high-life beat.
According to Eliseus manager, Nyasha Makina, Eliseu started his career in the year 2003 and he also plays various music instruments like the piano.
“He also writes music for other musicians and some of his work has earned him an award in Mozambique,” said Nyasha.
He also said that in the year 2023, Eliseus released his debut album “Metamoforse” which contains 12 tracks. Adding that the artist also draw inspiration from music Mozambican music legend Stewart Sukuma.
