Harare- Zimbabwean agricultural scientist and University of Zimbabwe lecturer Dr Miriam Chibvongodze is contributing to the country’s efforts to strengthen food security and adapt to climate change through research that has resulted in the development of a drought-tolerant, high-performing sorghum variety.

Her doctoral research examined the genetic diversity of sorghum varieties and how different genotypes respond to Zimbabwe’s diverse environmental conditions.

The research has contributed to the development of VNS401, a high-performing sorghum variety that has since been commercially released through NV Seeds (Pvt) Ltd, a University of Zimbabwe start-up.

The development comes at a time when Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector continues to face the effects of drought, changing rainfall patterns and climate variability, all of which pose challenges to food production.

Turning research into a practical solution

Dr Chibvongodze’s work stands out because her research has moved beyond academic study and into commercial agricultural application.

Sorghum is widely regarded as a crop that can withstand dry conditions better than many traditional cereal crops. The availability of a high-yielding variety adapted to Zimbabwean conditions could therefore provide farmers with another option as they navigate increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.

Research recognition

Her contribution to agricultural research and innovation was recognised at the University of Zimbabwe, where she received the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Overall Best Postgraduate Researcher and Innovator in the Natural and Applied Sciences, in collaboration with Gramlex Investment (Pvt) Ltd.

The award highlights the growing role of research institutions in developing practical solutions to some of Zimbabwe’s economic and social challenges.

Dr Chibvongodze’s achievement also demonstrates the potential of universities to move research from academic papers into products and technologies that can benefit communities.

Supporting climate-smart agriculture

The development of VNS401 could have benefits extending beyond crop production.

A resilient and productive cereal crop can support household food supplies, strengthen rural livelihoods and help farmers manage the risks associated with drought and erratic rainfall.
