Kariba- Twenty-four more bodies have been recovered from Lake Kariba after they were found trapped beneath a ferry that capsized on Tuesday, pushing the number of bodies retrieved so far to 37 as authorities continue a desperate search for survivors and victims.
The latest bodies were recovered this morning by Zimbabwe Defence Forces and Zimbabwe Republic Police sub-aqua units during ongoing search and recovery operations, the Joint Operations Command said.
The development brings the number of confirmed bodies recovered to 37, following the 13 deaths previously announced by the police.
Meanwhile, police said 67 people had been rescued and taken to Mahombe-kombe Primary School Command Centre for medical attention and further management.
Authorities are still working to establish exactly how many people were aboard the ferry when it overturned.
Police said the vessel had a confirmed carrying capacity of 90 passengers, excluding five crew members.
However, initial investigations suggest that the ferry may have been carrying more people than its stated capacity.
Search and recovery operations are continuing, with authorities expected to provide further updates as efforts intensify to determine the full extent of the disaster.
