Chirundu – Former legislator Sabhuku Temba Mliswa has on Friday accused a Zambian police officer of demanding a bribe along the Chirundu Highway, vowing to file a formal complaint with the Zambia Police Service.
“On my way from an exciting holiday in Zambia I had an unpleasant experience with a Zambian Police Assistant Inspector along the Chirundu Highway who wanted to robe us in broad daylight,” Mliswa narrated.
“He flagged us down 15 km from the border and without explaining any charge demanded that we turn the car back and drive to Lusaka. We asked what the issue was but he couldn’t explain and yet demanded 1000 Kwacha if he would leave us.”
Mliswa said he refused to pay the bribe.
“We refused, gave him my passport and will be making a formal charge against him to Zambia Police Service. It’s shocking how corruption is eroding public services to this shocking point in our countries.”
Meanwhile, the former Zanu‑PF chairperson for Mashonaland West and later independent MP for Norton, Mliswa has spent years confronting graft both inside Zimbabwe and abroad.
He serves as the inaugural Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) chapter chairperson of the African Parliamentarians Network Against Corruption (APNAC) and was unanimously elected APNAC vice president in July 2025 for the continent wide body.
Mliswa has openly lamented that “corruption is a pandemic that fights back and requires stringent resistance” and he has urged government offices to create anti‑corruption units that are “constantly rotated to protect it from being corrupted”.
