Morroco- As the Africa Cup of Nations finals is set to roar tonight, the familiar hum of expectation is spreading across the continent. From North Africa to the Cape, qualified teams are sharpening their tools for a tournament that promises drama, flair and the enduring unpredictability that has come to define African football.
Defending champions Côte d’Ivoire and traditional heavyweights such as Senegal, Egypt, Algeria and Morocco arrive with pedigree and pressure in equal measure. Elsewhere emerging forces like Mali, Burkina Faso and Equatorial Guinea underline the growing depth of the competition, while debutants and returning sides see AFCON as a stage to announce their arrival.
Every group appears balanced on a knife edge where reputation alone offers no guarantees.
For Zimbabwe’s Warriors however, the narrative is more intimate and unresolved. Qualification itself has often felt like a victory, yet the inability to break free from the group stages has become an uncomfortable constant. Tournament after tournament flashes of promise have been followed by narrow defeats, costly lapses and the lingering sense that more was possible.
This year’s finals reopen that familiar question; could this be the moment the Warriors finally turn potential into progress?
Preparations for the tournament have not been without setbacks. The exclusion of captain Marshall Munetsi due to a purported injury has removed leadership, energy and experience from midfield leaving a void both tactical and emotional. To add insult to injury,the most suitable replacement for Munetsi,Andy Rinomhota suddenly withdrew from the tournament due to urgent family matters days before the resumption of games,surely in midfield the Warriors are walking a tightrope.
Yet AFCON has always thrived on unlikely turns. Zimbabwe enter once more as underdogs but perhaps with lighter expectations and a clearer understanding of what the stage demands. If resilience replaces hesitation and belief outweighs history, the Warriors may finally find that elusive breakthrough. In a tournament where surprises are tradition, Zimbabwe will dare to hope that this AFCON writes a different ending.The Patriot in me will forever bellow out : Go Warriors Go!!!!
