A sand-laden lorry collided with a moving train late Wednesday night at a level crossing in Kadoma, in an incident that miraculously left the driver and his passenger with only minor injuries.

According to the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ), the crash occurred just before midnight, when the truck approached the railway line at high speed. Preliminary reports suggest that the driver lost control of the vehicle as it neared the crossing.

Sensing imminent danger, both the driver and passenger reportedly jumped out of the truck moments before it slammed into the rear carriages of the train.

“The lorry crashed into the last two wagons after the driver and his passenger abandoned the vehicle. Fortunately, they survived and were taken to hospital, treated, and later discharged,” said an NRZ spokesperson.

Authorities have again warned drivers to exercise caution near railway crossings, and to avoid operating faulty vehicles that could contribute to such accidents.

This Kadoma crash comes on the heels of another serious collision, which occurred less than 24 hours earlier on Chiremba Road in Harare. In that incident, a Honda Fit reportedly attempted to beat an oncoming train at a level crossing around 1 AM, resulting in a violent impact that left six people seriously injured.

The victims of the Harare crash were promptly rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

The NRZ continues to urge motorists to prioritize safety at all level crossings, as these dangerous incidents highlight the risks of reckless or careless behavior near railway lines.
