Harare – AN infant died at a Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) referees’ training seminar held Wednesday, Express Mail Zim Sports can report.

According to ZIFA, the infant’s mother was one of the female participants and had brought her two children to the seminar when tragedy struck.

The national football mother body confirmed the incident but did not disclose the cause or circumstances leading to the death.

“One of the female participants, who had attended with her two children, suffered the sudden and unexpected loss of her infant child during the course of the day,” ZIFA said in a statement .

The statement further stated that attempts to assist the child proved futile, but it did not specify what kind of assistance was rendered or what could have triggered the infant’s sudden death.

The ambiguity surrounding the incident has fueled speculation with the matter now under investigation by the Zimbabwe Republic Police.

ZIFA assured that it is cooperating with authorities while also offering support to the bereaved family.

“We are extending support to the bereaved mother during this extremely difficult time. As an Association, we extend our deepest condolences and respectfully ask that their privacy be observed,” the statement added.
