Harare – The Ministry of Mines and Mining Development has Monday issued an urgent safety alert warning that the onset of the rainy season poses “grave dangers” to large, medium and small scale miners across the country.
Flooding, drowning ground instability subsidence and slimes dam breaches are expected to increase, the ministry said.

The ministry made emphasis on the fact that precautionary measures will reduce loss of lives
The ministry urged all miners to observe precautions that involve avoiding working or mining along waterways where upstream rain could flood shafts; to refrain from digging or blasting in old work sites as the ground may be unstable; cease pillar robbing at all times; sink shafts in low‑lying areas that are prone to flooding; divert free‑flowing water away from shaft workings; conduct thorough risk assessments before entering underground shafts and halt operations if any risk is identified until the rains stop.
It further urged miners to cooperate fully with government authorities.
“Human life is by far worth more than any mineral, so let us preserve it,” the ministry said, stressing that compliance with the safety directives is mandatory to prevent further loss of life and equipment.

Meanwhile , minister Winston Chitando also addressed journalists Monday at his offices, reinforcing the same stance and said all perpetrators who defy the law of the land will face its wrath.
