HARARE — President Emmerson Mnangagwa has on Tuesday appointed Dr Dilesh Nguwaya as Special Advisor to the President on Waste Management and Environmental Sustainability.
Dr Nguwaya is the Chief Executive and Executive Chairman of Geo Pomona Waste Management (Pvt) Ltd.
The appointment recognises Dr Nguwaya’s work in transforming the country’s waste management sector through public-private partnerships and environmental initiatives aligned to Vision 2030.
The new role places Dr Nguwaya at the center of Government efforts to shape national policy on environmental management, green energy and waste disposal.
Under his leadership, Geo Pomona Waste Management has overseen the redevelopment of the Pomona dumpsite in Harare into a modern waste-to-energy facility. The project is being implemented as a public-private partnership with the City of Harare and Government.
The facility is expected to process municipal solid waste and generate electricity, in line with Government’s drive to promote sustainable waste management and renewable energy.
In his capacity as Special Advisor, Dr Nguwaya will provide guidance on strategies to improve waste collection, recycling, landfill management, and the rollout of waste-to-energy projects in urban centers across the country.
President Mnangagwa has prioritized environmental sustainability and clean cities under the National Development Strategy 1 and Vision 2030.
