Mash East- VACCILATING Mashonaland East Zanu PF provincial chairperson Daniel Garwe has touched a raw nerve after he allegedly indirectly mocked party benefactor and central committee member Kudakwashe Tagwirei for dishing out hampers to impoverished Zimbabweans.
Addressing a rally in his constituency, Garwe said giving out hampers will not end poverty but people must work with their hands, wantonly turning a blind eye to empowerment initiatives done by Tagwirei.
Garwe, who is Local government minister has for some time being a top cheer leader in calling for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to continue ruling past his constitutionally mandated 2028 to 2030.
In a somersault, in recent months, he has gone on mute raising questions whether he has been bribed into silence or his agenda was different from the start to other party supporters who have been advancing the term extension move and those who include Tagwirei.
Through his Bridging Gap Foundation, Tagwirei has been giving the less privileged throughout the country joining other philanthropists of note.
But according to Garwe, this is wrong and does not help the poor.
Analysts such as Kudzai Mtisi said while Garwe’s call for people to work was spot on, his attack on those giving to the less privileged was wrong and ill-advised.
“Modern politics NEEDS money… so much that the political success or failure of politicians and political parties can be predicted by simply looking at their ability to MOBILISE CAMPAIGN FUNDS,” opined Mtisi.
“Do hampers/handouts end poverty?? Definitely NOT! Food hampers are SHORT TERM relief for families. Once a family receives a food hamper, they now have extra money to do other things. A family that received a Christmas food hamper may now use their budgeted food allowance for school fees or other needs in January.
In most cases, these are GIFTS, it doesn’t mean those families would starve to death if they don’t get the hampers. Private companies and individuals have always practiced philanthropy during Christmatide, however if done by politicians people tend to see it as “buying support”.
Ex-Zanu PF provincial chairperson for Mashonaland West Temba Mliswa said Garwe was in actual fact attacking President Mnangagwa and Zanu PF as giving is part and parcel of the doctine followed by the party he leads.
“This was an unnecessary lash out for someone in a party whose trademark is handing out such gifts. Beware lest you end up attacking your own party and comrades!
Even the same Lord Jesus you quoted, at one time on the mountain, he handed out food donations which today stand as a testament of divine power. They never eradicated poverty but served a practical use in that moment.
For someone championing the 2030 agenda such reckless messages don’t help your cause,” said Mliswa.

Some inside Zanu PF sources allege Garwe was suffering from selective amnesia as his rise in 2018 was through the help of people he is now attacking who include Shumba -Mupositori who campaigned for him.
“Garwe is insane and must have dementia.
“In-fact his head needs to be examined. He must focus on his health and his wife who is politically struggling to win anything in Goromonzi,” said a Zanu PF provincial member in Mashonaland East.
Garwe is slowly getting unpopular through reckless outbursts at political gatherings.
