Dakar- The news has hit Dakar like a rogue wave. Many months after the confetti had been swept from the streets, after the victory parades and the presidential accolades, the trophy has gone. CAF, bowing to an appeal from Morocco, has ruled that Senegal’s momentary walk-off during the final constituted a forfeit. The 1-0 victory has been erased, replaced by a 3-0 defeat. Morocco now the new champions of AFCON 2025 .
Senegal’s Federation has called the decision “unfair, unprecedented and unacceptable” a sentiment echoed by fans who felt the soul of the game had been traded for a strict reading of Article 84 . They vowed to take the fight to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but for now, the silverware is headed to Rabat .
To fully understand the weight of this decision, one must look to another hemisphere, another era. In 1986,the late legend Diego Maradona punched the ball into England’s net,a blatant handball missed by the officials. It was to later be dubbed the “Hand of God” which propelled Argentina to World Cup glory . For England, it was a theft; for Argentina, it was a cunning, almost divine intervention that avenged yesteryear political wounds . The goal stood and the trophy was lifted.
The parallel is a stark lesson in the nature of football justice. Maradona’s deceit was a moment of chaos, frozen in time by the limits of human error. It became a legendary, if tainted, part of the sport’s folklore. The CAF ruling, however, is a cold, administrative overhaul. It is not a missed call in the heat of the moment but a deliberate, post-facto rewriting of history.
The precedent it sets is chilling: a title is no longer won on the pitch, but in the boardroom. One decision relied on the referee’s blindness; the other relies on the letter of the law,specifically Article 84. Both leave nations feeling cheated, but only one strips champions bare ,months after their crowning moment.
