Polokwane- A Delta bus en- route to Zimbabwe from Johannesburg was reportedly hijacked in South Africa Thursday morning in yet another incident that confirms the growing trend of attacks targeting cross-border buses.
Witnesses say the bus was ambushed along its route and passengers were robbed of their belongings.
Disturbingly, two people were allegedly shot dead during the attack.
The development reflects a surge in cross border bus hijackings particularly on routes linking South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Travellers have increasingly become targets for organised criminal gangs who prey on long-distance coaches since the Zimbabweans will have money to horde goods in South Africa.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement but inside police sources confirm that bus hijackings have been escalating over recent months.
The safety of regional transport networks is under scrutiny.
