Sakubva,Mutare-Manica Diamonds breathed fresh life into their Castle Lager Premier Soccer League survival campaign after edging Triangle United 1-0 in a tense Matchday 24 encounter at Sakubva Stadium yesterday, courtesy of a second-half strike from new signing Carlos Mavhurume.
The victory was as priceless as it was overdue for the Gem Boys, who dominated large spells of the contest but were left frustrated by poor finishing before finally finding the breakthrough in the 73rd minute.
With the stakes sky high in the relegation battle, coach Herbert Maruwa’s men produced an energetic display, controlling possession and dictating the tempo from the first whistle. However, their inability to convert clear-cut opportunities nearly proved costly.
The hosts fashioned no fewer than five gilt-edged chances in the opening half alone, carving open the Triangle defence with slick passing movements and relentless attacking football. Yet, wayward finishing and some resolute goalkeeping denied them the early lead as the teams went into the halftime break deadlocked.
It was a first-half performance that deserved more than the scoreline reflected. The Gem Boys played as a cohesive unit, pressing high, winning the midfield battle and stretching Triangle’s defence, but the final touch deserted them.
Recognising the need for fresh impetus, Maruwa turned to his bench in the second half, introducing Russell Kahiki, whose impact was immediate.
The supersub injected pace, urgency and creativity into the Manica attack. His decisive contribution came in the 73rd minute when he danced past his marker before delivering a perfectly weighted pass into the path of new recruit Carlos Mavhurume, who kept his composure to slot home and send the home supporters into wild celebrations.
The goal ultimately separated the two sides and handed Manica Diamonds three precious points in their battle against the drop.
Liberty Masvaure , Divine Zulu Kupakwashe Chitukutuku, Darrel Zulu and man of the Match Philip Kaseke proved that Manica Diamonds has what it takes to remain in the top flight.
Despite the victory, the Gem Boys remained rooted in their league position after fellow relegation rivals Agama FC defeated Simba Bhora while TelOne also secured maximum points against CAPS United in Gweru, leaving the survival battle finely poised.
With nine matches remaining before the curtain comes down on the 2026 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season, every point has now become invaluable.
Speaking after the match, a delighted Maruwa praised his players for their determination but admitted they must become more clinical in front of goal.
“The most important thing today was collecting maximum points at home. The boys showed character, they worked hard and they deserved the victory. We created many chances, especially in the first half, and on another day we could have scored more goals. We have to improve our finishing because these are the kind of matches that can easily punish you if you don’t take your opportunities,” said Maruwa.
The veteran coach believes the victory has injected fresh belief into his squad.
“The result keeps our survival hopes alive. We still have nine games to play and we will continue fighting until the very end. Every match is now like a cup final for us.”
Club president Kamombo welcomed the victory but challenged the players to develop a ruthless mentality as the battle for survival intensifies.
“I am happy with the result because these are the points we desperately needed. However, the boys must show more hunger to win. We cannot continue wasting so many chances if we are serious about surviving. We need to kill games early and reward ourselves for the good football we are playing.”
The home supporters also played their part, creating a lively atmosphere throughout the afternoon as a fair crowd turned out to back their team despite the enormous pressure surrounding the relegation battle.
Many supporters vowed they would continue rallying behind the Gem Boys until safety is secured.
One passionate supporter said:
“We will never get tired of supporting Manica Diamonds. This team belongs to the people of Manicaland and we will stand with them until the last game. If Manica Diamonds are relegated, we will lose the opportunity to watch Premier Soccer League football in Mutare, and we cannot allow that to happen.”
Another fan echoed similar sentiments
“The players fought for the badge today and we are proud of them. We want them to keep believing because we also believe survival is still possible. We will continue filling the stadium and pushing the team forward.”
Before kick-off, the football fraternity was united in grief as both teams observed a minute of silence in honour of members of the Highlanders Football Club leadership who tragically lost their lives on Thursday night while travelling back to Bulawayo following their league assignment against ZPC Kariba in Kariba.
The solemn tribute was impeccably observed by players, officials and supporters, providing a poignant reminder that football remains one family beyond the results on the pitch.
For Manica Diamonds, however, attention now shifts to the remaining nine fixtures where every tackle, every pass and every goal could determine whether the Gem Boys preserve their top-flight status.
Yesterday’s victory may not have lifted them from their current league position, but it rekindled belief that survival remains within reach. If they can marry their attractive football with greater efficiency in front of goal, the Gem Boys may yet script one of the season’s great escape stories.
