Harare- Veteran human rights activist and opposition politician Linda Masarira has died at the age of 43.
Masarira, leader of the Labour Economists and African Democrats (LEAD) party, died in Harare early Sunday, according to close associates.
“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of LEAD president Linda Tsungirirai Masarira,” friend and associate Abigale Mupambi said in a statement.
Mupambi said Masarira had been battling health problems but recently appeared to be recovering.
A vocal advocate for women’s and children’s rights, Masarira previously served in the People’s Democratic Party and later as spokesperson for the Thokozani Khupe-led MDC-T before founding LEAD in 2019.
She attempted to contest the 2023 presidential election but failed to secure nomination after fees were raised from US$1,000 to US$20,000.
