Harare: AS the global culinary stage prepares to welcome its brightest young talents, Zimbabwe stands poised for representation by Commis Chef Tadiwanashe Taruvinga.
Ahead of her departure for the prestigious Young Chefs Olympiad 2026 ,Express Mail Zim had the privilege of sitting down with Chef Taruvinga in Harare befto delve into this monumental achievement and her rigorous preparations.
The interview began with an acknowledgment of the significance of her selection, prompting Chef Taruvinga to articulate the essence of the competition and what it personally signifies.
“The Young Chefs Olympiad is one of the world’s largest culinary competitions for young talent. It’s not just about cooking; it promotes global gastronomy and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. To be chosen to represent Zimbabwe is the greatest honour of my career so far.
” It validates all the training and puts our national culinary skill on the map.”
The upcoming competition is set to span across seven vibrant cities in India, presenting a formidable challenge against the world’s most promising young chefs. When asked about his preparation for such an intense event, Chef Taruvinga detailed her focused approach.
“The preparation is intense. We are studying the formats, understanding the judging criteria which emphasize sustainability and innovation, and of course, honing technical skills. My mentors at S.A.H.T.C. are invaluable. We’re focusing on how to infuse Zimbabwean flavours and ingredients into global techniques to create a unique statement.”
S.A.H.T.C., the institution that has nurtured his talent, has clearly played a pivotal role in his journey.
Chef Taruvinga spoke passionately about its influence.
“It has been everything. S.A.H.T.C. provided the foundation, the discipline, and the platform. The press conference this Thursday is a moment to share this journey with the nation and to thank the educators who believed in me. It’s about showing other young Zimbabweans what is possible with support and dedication.”
As the interview drew to a close, the conversation turned to her ultimate aspirations for the competition and a message for her compatriots.
“My goal is to perform with excellence, to learn from chefs from other cultures and to make my country proud. To everyone at home, I carry your spirit with me. I will cook with the heart of Zimbabwe and I aim to bring that trophy home.”
Commis Chef Tadiwanashe Taruvinga is set to depart shortly for the competition, which is scheduled to run from the 1st to the 6th of February. Zimbabwe eagerly awaits the performance of its culinary ambassador on the international stage.
